Custom Ocular Prosthesis / Artificial Eyes

The ocular prosthesis is an artificial eye made from high quality medical grade acrylic. This material allows for a strong, smooth, durable, and life like appearance. It is made from an exact impression of the eye socket 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. This method allows for better comfort, improved motility, and assures the health of your socket. Every detail is hand painted to match the companion eye and to achieve the appearance of a natural eye.

Custom Therapeutic Scleral Shell

The scleral shell is an impression fitted ocular prosthesis that covers a non-functioning, disfigured, shrunken, and/or blind eye. Because the shell is worn over a living eye; motility is often superb and the shape is usually thinner. Due to the sensitive nature of the living eye, there is an added step prior to the fabrication process.  During this step, a clear custom trial shell is made to aid in the careful evaluation and determination of the wearing success.

Enlargement / Reduction

Periodically, as the body grows or changes the socket may cause the ocular prosthesis to become misaligned, appear sunken, or have lid asymmetry. If this occurs, the ocular prosthesis needs to be adjusted by either adding or removing acrylic.

Polishing / Resurfacing

Every 6 months to 1 year, the ocular prosthesis needs to be evaluated and the socket examined. Over time scratches and deposits accumulate on the ocular prosthesis and these must be polished to restore the acrylic finish and maintain the health of the socket.

Extra My Approach
Natural Iris Conformer

Natural-Iris Conformers are temporary devices used after eye removal or orbital surgery to maintain the shape of the socket and prevent closure or adhesions during the healing process. Because it has an iris image embedded in opaque plastic, they are a more natural appearing rehabilitative conformer which allows the patient to comfortably heal without an eye patch.

Clear Conformer

Clear Conformers are often placed during surgery and used after the enucleation to provide a smooth surface for the lids to blink over while protecting the surgical closure beneath it. Conformers are temporarily used for approximately 6 to 8 weeks following enucleation, and then replaced by a custom impression fitted ocular prosthesis fabricated by a board certified ocularist.

Custom Therapeutic / Expansion Conformer

Custom Therapeutic Conformers are a progressive series of custom impression fitted plastic stents, increased over time, to develop the eye socket for optimal prosthetic eye results. They are designed to help expand contracted sockets or aid in the comfort of the eventual prosthesis.

Novelty / Fun Ocular Prosthesis

An ocular prosthesis made using the same method and materials. However, it is designed not to match the companion eye, and allows the patient 100% creativity. Every detail is hand painted / created to achieve a fun and very unique personality.
